What Are Migraines?
Migraine headaches usually are associated with sensitivity to sound, light, and smells. Some people have symptoms of nausea or vomiting. This type of a headache often involves only one side of the head, but in some cases, patients may experience pain bilaterally or on both sides. The pain of a migraine is often described as throbbing or pounding and it may be made worse with physical exertion. A migraine headache is a result of specific changes in the brain.
Cannabis is used as a migraine herbal supplement. Cannabis has been used for centuries as a natural remedy. In the late 1800s Cannabis was often used by doctors for treating migraines and other types of headaches.
The Cannabis sativa hemp plant contains more than 400 chemicals. The chemical responsible for many of Cannabis?s qualities is called THC, or Tetrahydrocannabinol. It binds to receptors found throughout the body?s brain and other parts of the nervous system. THC acts on these receptors that impact pain, appetite, pleasure, memory, thought and coordination.
Migraine headaches are debilitatingly painful and often don?t respond to standard pain relievers. That?s why Cannabis?s potential for treating migraine headaches is a big deal for many patients.
Existing research shows Cannabis to be an effective general pain reliever, and new evidence suggests migraine pain frequently responds quite well to certain Cannabis strains.
