What Is Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD)/Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)?
The primary features associated with the disability are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness.
ADD/ADHD is now divided into three sub-types, according to the main features associated with the disorder: inattentiveness, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. To be diagnosed with either ADD or ADHD it must impact your day to day life.
The three sub-types are:
- Hyperactive-Impulsive Type
- Inattentive Type
- Combination Type
ADD seems to involve a shortage of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is involved in the brains pleasure and reward system. Dr. David Bearman, a figurehead of cannabis research, has studied the relationship between the cannabinoid system and ADHD and discovered potential therapeutic value as cannabinoids interact with the brain?s dopamine management systems. Dr. Bearman wrote ?Cannabis appears to treat ADD and ADHD by increasing the availability of dopamine?
Medical News Today says “In a study of 268 separate online discussion threads, 25 percent of people said they believed that Cannabis was useful. The researchers point out, however, that research proving a connection between Cannabis and positive therapeutic outcomes is limited.” Without accurate research it seems using Cannabis for ADD may not be an effective treatment option. Still, proponents of Cannabis say it increases dopamine like current medication without nearly as many harmful side effects.
There seems to mostly be anecdotal evidence in the whether Cannabis for ADD is effective. More research needs to be done before we can say how effective Cannabis is at treating ADD. If no other medication has helped get your ADD in control you may want to try medical Cannabis.
